Erich Kästner (1899–1974) was a German author, poet, and satirist. He is best known for his children's books, most notably Emil und die Detektive, but also wrote poetry, cabaret texts, and novels for adults. His works were burned by the Nazis in 1933; nonetheless he remained in Germany and became a prominent cultural figure after the war.
