L'incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppea) is an opera by Claudio Monteverdi, first performed in Venice in 1643. It is one of the earliest surviving operas and the first to draw its subject from historical events, depicting the Roman emperor Nero and his lover Poppea. It is widely regarded as a pinnacle of early Baroque music theatre.
