The Nutcracker is the last and most celebrated work of composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The story is based on the fantastical tale by German Romantic writer E. T. A. Hoffmann, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King".
A young girl receives a nutcracker as a gift and dreams that it transforms into a fairy-tale prince - a story that has captivated audiences of all ages around the world. For a few hours, the everyday world gives way to a romantic, imagination-filled realm of dreams and longing.
On Christmas Eve, after the guests have gone, Clara returns to her presents and falls asleep. At midnight, the nutcracker and the dolls come to life, and she suddenly finds herself in the middle of an enchanted world. Snowflakes and dancing flowers accompany her on a journey to the kingdom of the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy. A magical Christmas tale that delights young and old ballet fans at every performance.
The ballet "The Nutcracker" premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in December 1892.
The show is performed by International Ballet Company Italia under the artistic direction of Alessandro Bonavita.
