All'ungherese

Beatrice Rana | piano
Elim Chan | conductor

Johannes Brahms | Piano Concerto No. 2
Béla Bartók | Concerto for Orchestra

Reversed roles: a piano concerto that performs like a full-blown symphony with piano solo - and a concerto in which the orchestra slips into the role of soloist. They all have to be virtuosos on their instruments, but Italy's leading pianist is the one who is asked to do the most.

Ten years ago, she could not have imagined playing Brahms' powerful and full-bodied piano concertos, Beatrice Rana recently admitted in an interview. But now the moment has come - and for her too: the Rome-based pianist finds the deep, serious tone for Brahms that can also be so energetic, and charming with its Hungarian accent so beloved by Brahms - as in the finale of Piano Concerto No. 2, which the composer himself once premiered in Budapest. A new level of temperament and brilliance then ignites the genuine Hungarian Béla Bartók with his "Concerto for Orchestra". At the podium: conductor Elim Chan, from Hong Kong, who knows how to make the orchestra glow with her feel for orchestral colour.
