Legends and myths are often the seeds of fairy tales, and this evening brings together some of the most vivid figures from Russian folklore - from eerie poltergeists and witches to a prince's battle against evil. The programme builds to a climax with Stravinsky's celebrated Firebird ballet score. The freedom-loving, benevolent fairy - the Firebird - rescues the lovers Tsarevna and Tsarevich from the grip of the wicked sorcerer Kashchei. As in any good fairy tale, good triumphs over evil in the end.
