How to train your general knowledge

When was the Prague Defenestration? How many bits make a byte? What is the capital of Bolivia? Whether it's a job application, an aptitude test, a job interview, or just holding your own at a party - solid general knowledge pays off everywhere. Sebastian Klussmann, a popular "Chaser" from the successful ARD quiz show "Gefragt - gejagt", shares his straightforward approach to building up your knowledge without much effort. For instance, by exploring street names on a city walk and finding out who they commemorate. Or by learning geography through football. Or by linking topics to emotions - like asking your grandmother to show you her favourite flowers in the garden.

What makes readily available knowledge so appealing - and do we even need it in the age of Google? More and more people don't care about raw facts; the whole world is in their pocket, searchable at any moment. Klussmann still believes knowledge has real value. "You shouldn't outsource your brain to the cloud," he says. "Our democracy only works if we have informed citizens who can make sense of things beyond their own professional field." With facts in your head, you draw better conclusions and ask sharper questions. "The more we know, the more nuanced our view of the world becomes."

How do you acquire knowledge in a lasting way? That is one of the central questions Sebastian Klussmann explores in his talk.
