"The devil took them!" is what the villagers say when the entire Danner family is found dead on a remote farm in Tannöd. Six people were killed in a single night, including two children. Fear spreads through the community. No clues, no known motive. What happened here?

The true and still unsolved murder case from 1922 inspired author Andrea Maria Schenkel to write "Tannöd". Published in 2006, the novel became a major success, winning the Deutscher Krimipreis in 2007. A film adaptation followed in 2009. It is a gripping, unsettling crime story and at the same time a precise portrait of an era when things were buried in silence, and the suffocating closeness of rural society left no room to breathe.
