Long, long ago, dragons lived and protected the world from the cold of ice with the warmth of their fire. But over time, ice began to destroy all living things. Arktos, a terrible snowman, seeks to cover the world in ice. The old dragon Tyrion wants to prepare his little son Tabaluga for his destined task of protecting the world. To do this, Tabaluga must find the True Fire, for only then can he end Arktos' schemes.

Tabaluga sets out on his journey with the support of a sorcerer. He faces many dangers, such as the spider woman Tarantula, and also discovers beautiful things. He learns that the world, with all its good and evil, is wonderful and worth saving. But Arktos will not allow Tabaluga to fulfill his destiny. He creates from pure ice a beautiful being - the girl Lilli - whose only task is to distract Tabaluga from his search for the True Fire.
