Michael Hampel and Phileas Baun both teach guitar at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg. They are accomplished soloists and experienced chamber musicians, known for their unconventional, award-winning concert formats.
Michael Hampel is Professor of Guitar at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg/Breisgau. From 1994 he worked at the Hochschule für Musik Trossingen, eventually serving as its rector. After studies in Frankfurt am Main, Trossingen, and Salzburg, he launched an international concert career with regular tours to Asia and South America, including numerous recordings and live broadcasts. From 2017 to 2019 he was a visiting professor at Tongji University in Shanghai. In recent years, alongside his teaching, he has focused on developing new concert formats that incorporate digital and theatrical elements.
Phileas Baun studied guitar, conducting, and early music in The Hague, Trossingen, and Basel. He is equally at home in contemporary and experimental music as on the classical concert stage. A prize-winner at numerous competitions, since 2021 he has taught "Guitar - Extended Competence Spectrum" at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg. His projects include co-productions with IRCAM Paris, world premieres at the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2018, and premieres at the Crossroads Festival Salzburg 2019. In 2024 he and his team won Switzerland's most prestigious live-event award, the "Xaver", for their performance at the opening show of the national hockey final.
