What is soul? A captivating musical style, an overwhelming feeling, something distinctive that defines us - each of these definitions fits the Matti Klein Soul Trio. Since 2017, three kindred spirits have come together in the name of groove, forging their own path beyond the well-trodden Hammond organ trio formula. At the heart of the sound are the warm Wurlitzer tones of internationally renowned bandleader Matti Klein, who has already performed with the funk-jazz ensemble Mo' Blow and Brazilian yacht-pop heavyweight Ed Motta on the stages of major jazz clubs in New York, Tokyo, London and Paris. In the lower register, a modified 1973 Fender Rhodes bass piano delivers a pleasant buzz, while Lars Dieterich on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet - drawing inspiration from Stanley Turrentine and Maceo Parker - delivers expressive solos and also plays synth and bass. Drummer André Seidel gives the trio its bouncy groove, allowing even complex odd meters to flow effortlessly. The Berlin-based band has performed over 300 concerts worldwide - from Haiti through South Africa to Malaysia. Their music organically blends vibrant soul-jazz and the instrumental funk of The Meters with hip-hop elements and spacey post-rock. Jazzwise magazine sums it up: "A new, smokin' hot twist on the much-loved organ trio format. They deserve to be huge everywhere!"
