The Puppet Play of Dr. Faust

The story of Dr. Faust - who makes a pact with the devil and is ultimately dragged down to hell - has inspired countless poets and composers from the Renaissance to the modern era to create their own remarkable retellings.

The old folk book about the "far-famed sorcerer" travelled across all of Europe: Christopher Marlowe brought it to the English stage, and it eventually became the source material for a large number of puppet plays.

Goethe probably saw one of these during his time in Strasbourg. Memminger Marionettentheater has created its own version of the story, and in doing so discovered that the old tale is still relevant today - as long as people are willing to make deals with dark forces.
