Based on the fairy tale by Wilhelm Hauff
Stage adaptation by Edith Ehrhardt
Peter Munk, a young charcoal burner from the Black Forest, dreams of advancement. He longs for wealth, recognition, a better life. Born on a Sunday, he is allowed to make three wishes to the mysterious Glass Man - and chooses money, success, and social standing. But soon he realizes this does not satisfy him. In his greed, he turns to the sinister Dutchman-Michel, who promises him immense wealth if he exchanges his beating heart for a heart of stone. The young charcoal burner agrees, but discovers that a stone heart brings prosperity yet also cold and loneliness. Peter loses not only his humanity but also the joy of life and community. Only when he has lost everything again does he understand what truly matters.
Wilhelm Hauff's fairy-tale classic "The Cold Heart" is a fitting parable for our modern world and our way of life. At the Lindenhof Theatre, the fairy tale is interpreted for adults. With heart and mind, with passion and love, with rich music and powerful imagery, this story of human nature is retold anew. It carries us into the fairy tale - and strikes right to the heart of life itself: a passionate plea for compassion, warmth, and what binds us together in our deepest selves.
