Mayas Kontra — Stadttheater Cuxhaven, Cuxhaven

A comedy by Carolina Zimmermann

23-year-old Maya has big plans: freshly naturalized, young, motivated, and armed with a membership card from a liberal-progressive party, she wants to make it in German politics. Unfortunately, no one told her that you need less idealism there - more patience, ruthlessness, and rhetorical brilliance. Above all, she lacks the ability to raise her voice without self-doubt. That's precisely what seems to trigger Dr. Christian Stahl, a political heavyweight from the opposing party. He becomes aggressive toward her, the scene is accidentally filmed and goes viral. The internet becomes a modern pillory for him, while Maya appears to be the winner. To contain the damage, party leadership forces Stahl to become her rhetoric and PR coach. Maya suddenly becomes the political poster child for the wrong people. Out of mutual hostility grows a delightfully strange relationship: somewhere between mutual provocation, trauma processing, and Schopenhauer. Maya is accompanied by Leonard, also a new citizen, a Swiss-born lover of rap and subculture. And by her father: he once brought her to safety in a country where he now feels increasingly out of place. Maya learns that raising your voice takes more than a microphone and a party card. In the end, both Maya and Stahl lose their political platform - but not their courage. The former "mortal enemies" launch a podcast together.

Mayas Kontra is sometimes quirky, sometimes biting, yet always profound and moving, forever searching for humanity.
