Dame Emma Thompson (born 15 April 1959) is a British actress and screenwriter whose career spans more than four decades on stage and screen. She holds two Academy Awards - for Best Actress in Howards End (1992) and for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sense and Sensibility (1995), making her the only person to have won Oscars for both acting and writing. Her further accolades include three BAFTA Awards, two Golden Globes, and a Primetime Emmy. In 2018 Queen Elizabeth II appointed her Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to drama.
The Sheep Detectives, a mystery comedy co-starring Thompson alongside Hugh Jackman, began streaming on Prime Video worldwide on 24 June 2026 after its theatrical release on 8 May 2026.
Apple TV+ renewed Down Cemetery Road, the thriller series starring Thompson and Ruth Wilson, for a second season following the first season finale.
The documentary Everybody to Kenmure Street, on which Thompson served as executive producer and voice performer, won the Special Jury Award for Civil Resistance at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
Thompson began her first regular television role since 2019, appearing as private investigator Zoë Boehm in the Apple TV+ thriller series Down Cemetery Road alongside Ruth Wilson.
The action thriller Dead of Winter, starring and executive produced by Thompson, had its world premiere at the 78th Locarno International Film Festival on 8 August 2025, before a theatrical release on 26 September 2025.
