Idris Elba (born 6 September 1972 in London) is an English actor, DJ, rapper, and producer who first gained wide recognition as Stringer Bell in HBO's The Wire and later as DCI John Luther in the BBC series Luther - the latter earning him a Golden Globe. Long before either role, he was already DJing in east London under the name DJ Big Driis, and music has run parallel to his screen career ever since: he runs the house label 7Wallace, launched the global imprint Sound International in 2024, and has played Coachella, Glastonbury, and Ibiza residencies. His films have collectively grossed over $9.8 billion at the global box office.
