Udo Lindenberg, born on 17 May 1946 in Gronau, Westphalia, is a German rock singer, songwriter, painter and the undisputed pioneer of German-language rock. Since the early 1970s he has shaped the genre with his Panikorchester, mixing straight-ahead rock with sharp, witty lyrics - proving that rock in German could work long before anyone else dared try. His 2023 duet "Komet" with rapper Apache 207 held the top spot in the German singles chart for 21 weeks, making it the longest-running number-one in German chart history. Beyond music, Lindenberg is a prolific visual artist and a cultural institution, named honorary citizen of Hamburg in 2022.
