Antonio Banderas (born 10 August 1960 in Málaga) is a Spanish actor, director, and theater impresario whose career spans more than four decades. He rose to international prominence through eight films with Pedro Almodóvar - most recently Pain and Glory (2019), which won him Best Actor at Cannes and his first Academy Award nomination - and through Hollywood roles in The Mask of Zorro, Desperado, and the Puss in Boots franchise. After a heart attack in 2017 he returned to Málaga, where he founded the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, producing and directing Spanish-language musicals including A Chorus Line, Company, and Gypsy.
Banderas is set to receive the Agent of Change award at the 23rd annual Premios Juventud ceremony in September 2026 for his social and educational impact.
Banderas joined the cast of the supernatural thriller Unmerciful Good Fortune, directed by Tirsa Hackshaw and co-starring Rosario Dawson, Scott Eastwood, and Susan Sarandon.
Banderas attended the premiere of Godspell at the Pavon Theater in Madrid in January 2026, a production staged at his Teatro del Soho CaixaBank.
Banderas filmed the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony in Boston and then traveled to the Canary Islands to shoot the action thriller Above and Below.
Banderas directed the Broadway classic Gypsy at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, the fourth musical he has directed since founding his Málaga theater company.
