Baron Hieronymus von Münchhausen (1720-1797) was a German nobleman famous for spinning outrageous tales of his own adventures - riding cannonballs, travelling to the Moon, pulling himself out of a swamp by his own pigtail. Rudolf Erich Raspe immortalised him in a 1785 book, and the name has been synonymous with tall tales ever since.
