About

Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was a German playwright, poet and theatre director, widely regarded as one of the most consequential dramatists of the 20th century. He developed the concept of epic theatre - a form that deliberately breaks theatrical illusion to provoke critical thinking rather than emotional identification - and put it into practice at the Berliner Ensemble, the company he co-founded in East Berlin in 1949 with his wife, actress Helene Weigel. His plays, from The Threepenny Opera to Mother Courage and Her Children and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, remain staples of world theatre repertoire.
