Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) was a German painter and a central figure of Romanticism. His canvases turn landscape into a space for spiritual contemplation - misty mountains, solitary figures gazing into the distance, crumbling Gothic ruins. His best-known work is Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1818).
