About

Dirk Michaelis (born 26 November 1961 in Karl-Marx-Stadt) is a German singer-songwriter who rose to prominence as the frontman of the East German rock band Karussell from 1985 to 1991. His ballad "Als ich fortging" - music composed by Michaelis himself, lyrics by Gisela Steineckert - became an anthem of the 1989 Wende and remains one of the most recognisable German songs of the 1980s. Since 1992 he has released over ten solo albums on his own label ROCKchanSONG, ranging across rock, chanson and R&B, and has collaborated with artists including José Carreras, Sarah Connor and Matthias Reim.
