Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was an Italian composer who wrote 39 operas between 1806 and 1829, setting new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties. His comic masterpiece Il barbiere di Siviglia (1816) remains one of the most performed operas in the world, and his nickname 'Signor Crescendo' captures the infectious rhythmic energy that defined his style. Alongside Bellini and Donizetti, he shaped the bel canto tradition that dominated Italian opera for half a century.
