Glenn Miller (1904-1944) was an American trombonist, arranger, and bandleader whose orchestra became the best-selling recording act of the swing era between 1939 and 1942. His signature sound - a clarinet riding above four saxophones in close harmony - gave hits like "In the Mood" and "Moonlight Serenade" an instantly recognisable quality that defined a generation. He disappeared on 15 December 1944 when his aircraft vanished over the English Channel while he was flying to entertain Allied troops in France. The Glenn Miller Orchestra has continued touring under successive directors ever since, and remains one of the most performed big-band catalogues in the world.
