Green Day is an American punk-rock band from the San Francisco Bay Area, formed in 1987 by vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt, with drummer Tré Cool joining in 1990. Their 1994 major-label debut Dookie sold over 20 million copies worldwide and reignited mainstream interest in punk rock. The 2004 rock opera American Idiot - which later became a Broadway musical - cemented the band's place in rock history, topping charts globally and earning multiple Grammys. With 14 studio albums and over 75 million records sold, Green Day remain one of the most influential rock acts of the past three decades.
