Herbert Grönemeyer (born 12 April 1956 in Göttingen) is a German singer-songwriter, musician, producer and actor - the best-selling recording artist in Germany, with over 18 million records sold domestically. His 1984 breakthrough album *4630 Bochum* and the 2002 landmark *Mensch* rank among the highest-selling German-language albums of all time. International audiences first encountered him as Lieutenant Werner in Wolfgang Petersen's 1981 war film *Das Boot*, but music has defined his career ever since.
