Hildegard Knef (1925-2002) was a German actress, chanson singer, and writer who built one of the most wide-ranging careers in postwar German culture. She starred in the first German film made after World War II, played Ninotchka in Cole Porter's Broadway musical Silk Stockings, and from 1963 reinvented herself as a songwriter and performer - writing most of her own lyrics and delivering them in a famously husky, smoky voice. Her autobiography Der geschenkte Gaul (1970) sold over three million copies worldwide, and Ella Fitzgerald called her 'the greatest singer without a voice.'
