Idomeneo (full title: Idomeneo, re di Creta) is an opera seria by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, first performed in Munich in 1781. The libretto, written by Giambattista Varesco after an older French source, draws on Greek mythology: the Cretan king Idomeneo returns from the Trojan War only to be trapped by a vow he made to the gods. It is one of the most ambitious works Mozart wrote for the operatic stage.
