Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was a Russian-born composer whose work reshaped the course of 20th-century music. He rose to international fame through three ballets written for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes - The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913), the last of which caused a near-riot at its Paris premiere. His career spanned over six decades and three distinct stylistic phases: a Russian nationalist period, a neoclassical period from the 1920s onward, and a late serial phase influenced by twelve-tone technique.
