Jeff Buckley (1966-1997) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, son of folk musician Tim Buckley, who built his reputation performing solo at New York's East Village cafes before signing to Columbia Records. His sole studio album, Grace (1994), blends alternative rock, folk and jazz into one of the most critically revered records of the 1990s, and his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" has become arguably the definitive version of the song. He drowned in the Mississippi River in Memphis on 29 May 1997, aged 30, leaving behind a legacy that has only grown in the decades since.
