Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was an Austrian composer who shaped the Classical era more durably than almost any of his contemporaries. He spent nearly three decades as Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court, and that productive isolation - as he himself put it, he was "forced to become original" - gave him the freedom to develop the symphony and the string quartet into the forms that Beethoven and Mozart would inherit. His output was staggering: over 107 symphonies, 83 string quartets, two landmark oratorios (The Creation and The Seasons), and a melody that became the national anthem of both Austria and Germany.
