Joy Division

About

Joy Division were a post-punk band from Salford, Manchester, active from 1976 to 1980. Built around Ian Curtis's baritone vocals and Peter Hook's melodic bass, their two studio albums - Unknown Pleasures (1979) and the posthumous Closer (1980) - helped define the sound of post-punk and laid the groundwork for gothic rock. Curtis died by suicide in May 1980, aged 23; the remaining members regrouped as New Order. In 2026, Joy Division and New Order were jointly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
