About

Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was an American composer, conductor, pianist, and educator whose career spanned Broadway, the concert hall, and television. He served as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic from 1958 to 1969, and was the first American-born conductor to lead the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics. His musical West Side Story (1957), written with Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins, remains one of the most performed works in the history of the stage, while his orchestral output - three symphonies, Chichester Psalms, Mass - continues to anchor concert programmes worldwide.
