Loriot was the pen name of Vicco von Bülow (1923-2011), a German comedian, cartoonist, screenwriter, and actor widely regarded as the greatest German humorist of the 20th century. Working from the 1950s onward, he built a body of work spanning illustrated cartoons, television sketches - most famously his 1976 series alongside Evelyn Hamann - and two feature films, Ödipussi (1988) and Pappa ante Portas (1991). His deadpan observations of bourgeois German life produced catchphrases that entered everyday speech, and a special edition of the TV poll Unsere Besten ranked him the most famous German comedian of all time.
