Lutz Rathenow is a German writer and essayist born in 1952 in Erfurt. He wrote samizdat texts in the GDR and was surveilled by the Stasi; after reunification he became a prominent voice in confronting the legacy of communist dictatorship. From 2011 to 2019 he served as Saxony's commissioner for Stasi records.
