Marina Abramović (born 30 November 1946 in Belgrade) is a Serbian performance artist whose work since the 1970s has tested the limits of the body, endurance, and the live relationship between artist and audience. Over five decades she has become the defining figure of performance art globally, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and becoming the first woman to hold a solo show across the full space of London's Royal Academy of Arts.
Balkan Erotic Epic (The Stage Version) premieres in Germany at Haus der Berliner Festspiele in October 2026, following its world immersive premiere in Manchester in October 2025.
The North American premiere of Balkan Erotic Epic runs at Park Avenue Armory, New York, 8-20 December 2026.
Abramović's exhibition Transforming Energy opens at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice on 6 May 2026, making her the first living female artist to show there in the institution's 250+ year history.
Abramović received the 2025 Praemium Imperiale Award for sculpture at a ceremony in Tokyo on 22 October 2025.
A major retrospective of Abramović's work opened at the Albertina Modern in Vienna on 10 October 2025, running until 1 March 2026.
