Mikhail Bulgakov was a Russian writer and playwright (1891–1940) known for his satirical and fantastical works critiquing Soviet society. The Heart of a Dog (1925) is one of his most celebrated novellas — an allegorical satire on Bolshevik social engineering. He is also widely known for his novel The Master and Margarita.
