Nikolai Gogol (1809–1852) was a Russian writer of Ukrainian origin and one of the most significant authors of the 19th century. He is known for his satirical prose and plays, including the comedy Marriage (Sňatek), The Government Inspector, and the Petersburg Tales cycle. His work had a lasting influence on Russian literature.
