Patrick Süßkind is a German novelist and screenwriter, born in 1949. He is best known for the novel Perfume (1985), but his first major success was the stage monologue The Double Bass (1981), a one-man play that has been performed worldwide ever since. Süßkind is also known for deliberately shunning public life.
