Peter Hacks (1928-2003) was a German playwright and writer who settled in East Germany in 1955. His plays are witty and ironic, often drawing on classical antiquity or the German literary tradition - works like Amphitryon and Die Fische brought him wide recognition. He is regarded as one of the most distinctive voices of East German theatre.
