Peter Hammill (born 5 November 1948, Ealing, London) is an English singer-songwriter, guitarist and pianist who co-founded the progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator in Manchester in 1967. Alongside the band's intense, avant-garde albums - from Pawn Hearts to the 2005 reunion record Present - he has built one of the most uncompromising solo catalogues in British rock, spanning more than 40 albums on his own Fie! Records label. His influence reaches well beyond prog: John Lydon of the Sex Pistols cited him as a key inspiration, and in 2012 he received the Visionary award at the inaugural Progressive Music Awards.
