Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a Russian Romantic composer whose operas, ballets, and symphonies have become cornerstones of the classical repertoire. He is best known for the ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, as well as the opera Eugene Onegin and the 1812 Overture. His gift for soaring melody and vivid orchestration made him, in the words of many historians, the most popular Russian composer of all time.
