About

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a Russian composer whose music became the most internationally celebrated of any 19th-century Russian artist. Trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he went on to write three ballets - Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker - that transformed the form from decorative spectacle into full-scale musical drama, alongside six symphonies, two landmark piano concertos and the operas Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades. His gift for melody and his command of the orchestra made his work a cornerstone of the classical repertoire that concert halls worldwide have never stopped programming.
