The Flying Dutchman - Leipzig Opera
Wagner's classic opera performed by the Leipzig Opera ensemble.
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a German composer whose operas fundamentally reshaped Western music. Born in Leipzig, he developed the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk - a total work of art fusing music, poetry, and drama - and pioneered the systematic use of leitmotifs. His crowning achievement, the four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, took 26 years to complete and remains one of the most ambitious works in the operatic canon. Wagner also wrote his own libretti, built a dedicated festival theatre in Bayreuth, and left a legacy that has provoked debate - artistic, philosophical, and political - ever since.
