Roman Polanski is a Polish-French film director, screenwriter and occasional actor. Born in Paris and raised in Kraków, he survived the Holocaust - an experience that left a deep mark on his work. His film The Pianist (2002), based on Władysław Szpilman's memoir, won him the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Director.
