Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) was a German-language Jewish poet born in Czernowitz (now Ukraine). She survived the Holocaust and spent much of her life in exile - first in the United States, later in Germany. Her poetry draws on the experience of displacement, loss and the German language as her only remaining homeland.
