Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919) was an Italian opera composer and librettist, born in Naples, who wrote both music and texts for nearly all of his works. His 1892 opera Pagliacci - premiered in Milan under the young Arturo Toscanini - became one of the most frequently performed operas in the world and a defining work of the verismo movement. Beyond Pagliacci, he composed the song "Mattinata" directly for Enrico Caruso, contributed to the libretto of Puccini's Manon Lescaut, and was widely regarded as the finest Italian librettist of his generation after Arrigo Boito.
