Salome is an opera by Richard Strauss, premiered in 1905, based on Oscar Wilde's play of the same name. It tells the story of the biblical Salome, who demands the head of John the Baptist as her reward for the dance of the seven veils. The work is known for its dense, expressive orchestration and the punishing demands it places on the soprano in the title role.
