Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908) was a German caricaturist, painter and poet whose satirical picture stories are considered a forerunner of the modern comic strip. His series Max und Moritz (1865) brought him worldwide fame and influenced generations of cartoonists. His humour was sharp and ironic, with a keen eye for human folly.
