Wim Mertens (born 14 May 1953 in Neerpelt, Belgium) is a Flemish composer, pianist, countertenor vocalist, guitarist, and musicologist whose career spans more than four decades. He studied political science at the University of Leuven and musicology at Ghent University, and went on to write the first scholarly book on American minimalist music in 1980. His 1983 piece "Struggle for Pleasure" became one of the most recognisable works in European contemporary classical music, later used in Peter Greenaway's film "The Belly of an Architect" and sampled by the trance project Energy 52.
Mertens released his latest album "As Water is to Fish" on 14 November 2025, an 11-track, 56-minute record on his own WimMertensMusic label.
Mertens performed at Casa da Música in Porto (2 Feb 2026) as part of a winter tour that also took him to Eindhoven, Coimbra, Lisboa, and Groningen.
The album "Ranges of Robustness" was released in June 2024, featuring a 21-musician ensemble exploring woodwinds, brass, strings, and a full rhythm section.
"Voice of the Living", an ensemble studio album, was released in 2023, originally commissioned to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
To mark his 40th artistic anniversary, Mertens released "Inescapable", a 4-CD limited-edition box set spanning four decades of composition (1980-2020).
