Wolfgang Borchert (1921-1947) was a German writer and playwright from Hamburg. His drama Draußen vor der Tür (The Man Outside) brought him lasting recognition - it follows a soldier returning home broken after World War II. He died at 26, yet his work remains central to German postwar literature.
